Putting You in the Picture
John Hegley

Engaging primary school children with poetry and visual art

Putting You in the Picture Putting You in the Picture is an education initiative developed by poet and performer John Hegley, and involving art galleries, poets and primary schools in Bradford, Bristol, London and Luton.

Working with one school in each region, the project asked children to imagine themselves as part of famous paintings. Classes visited their local gallery to see a painting from its permanent collection, and over the course of a two half-day workshops back at school, each child produced new artworks and poems creating imagined scenarios behind each painting.

Participating galleries included Bristol Museum and Art Gallery; Cartwright Hall, Bradford; The National Gallery, London; and Wardown House in Luton.

A free project teacher pack is available to support schools to create their own 'Putting You in the Picture' project.
